Abstract

Chikungunya (CHIK) has been classified as a communicable disease group IV in South Korea since the latter part of 2010. We investigated the extent of imported CHIKV cases in 2015. A total of 367 dengue-negative serum samples were tested for CHIK infection by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). Four out of the total tested samples (1.1%) were positive for CHIK by rRT-PCR and 17 samples (3.8%) were found to be positive by immunoglobin M ELISA. As clinical symptoms are similar between dengue and CHIK, laboratory testing of CHIK and dengue should be conducted in parallel.
